# America at War (Playing the "Chicago piano"; Marine Corps raiders; Pass up that evening out!)

Illustrated school news sheet of captioned war photographs: a multiple pompom naval gun, Marine raiders before the Makin Island raid, and U.S. soldiers by the Lincoln statue in London. Cartoon teenagers and a War Stamp price list urge pupils to skip an evening out and buy stamps. The 'Jap garrison' wording is name-calling; the stamp prices link small purchases to equipment.

America at War
AN EXCLUSIVE NEWS AND PICTURE SERVICE PREPARED FOR SCHOOLS AND SHOWING OUR COUNTRY IN ACTION. DISTRIBUTED BY THE U. S. TREASURY
PLAYING THE "CHICAGO PIANO." That's slang for the action of the new multiple PomPom machine gun. Its bullets weave a pattern of destruction, guard convoys against low-flying aircraft. Official U. S. Navy Photograph.
MARINE CORPS RAIDERS receive last minute instructions before shoving off for the Makin Island raid. These are some of the men who completely wiped out the surprised Jap garrison. Standing in foreground is Lt. Wilfred S. LeFrancois of Watertown, N. Y. He received five bullets in his shoulder, is now hospitalizing. Official Photo, U.S. Marine Corps.
U. S. SOLDIERS, stationed in Iceland, meet a revered countryman while they visit London on a furlough. This statue of Abraham Lincoln stands just across from Westminster Abbey. Photo by U. S. Army Signal Corps.

U. S. Asks Schools To Scour Countryside For Scrap
The War Production Board has called on the thirty million school boys and girls to put across a nationwide scrap collection drive. More weapons are needed for our fighting forces, and more scrap must be found to use in making them. Call on every house—search every vacant lot. Make sure your school is credited with collecting plenty of valuable scrap.

PASS UP THAT EVENING OUT!
Your dimes and quarters can do Big Things these days. Use them to buy War Savings Stamps. Our fighters from the South Pacific to the African desert need more and more bullets, guns and equipment—and your purchases of War Stamps help supply them. Did you know that—
One 10¢ War Stamp will buy a weather balloon, released from flying fields to determine direction of upper air currents.
One 25¢ War Stamp will buy a clip of eight bullets for the new Garand rifle.
Two 25¢ War Stamps will pay for twelve yards of barbed wire.
Help supply these needed things. Buy War Savings Stamps every day!
Prepared for the U. S. Treasury as an Aid to the Nation's War Effort by the F. W. Woolworth Co.
