(American Wheat to the Aid of the Jordanians) (Arabic photo-set poster distributed in the Middle East)

A photo-set poster in nine pictures and a boxed text reporting that the American steamer Albion landed 9,670 tons of wheat at Aqaba as a gift from the United States to the Jordanian people. Pictures show the ship, workers on the quay, sacks carried ashore, lorries, and bread-making in Amman. The tell is transfer: the relief of a grain shortage in southern Jordan is attached to the United States as donor, with officials named as receiving it.

AMERICAN WHEAT TO THE AID OF THE JORDANIANS

In the waters of Aqaba .. the American steamer "Albion" appeared, heading for the port of Aqaba with the gift of wheat to the Jordanian people on board.

On the quay of Aqaba port a hundred Palestinian and Arab Jordanian workers sat watching the steamer "Albion" as it headed for the port.

Last week there anchored in the waters of Aqaba - the Jordanian port on the Red Sea - the American steamer (Albion) carrying 9,670 tons of wheat, a gift from the United States to the Jordanian people, as a contribution from it to relieving the severe crisis suffered by the Jordanians in the southern region as a result of drought in the grain seasons and the exhaustion of their stocks from previous years.

Not one hour had passed after the arrival of the wheat gift at the Jordanian port - and it was received by some Jordanian ministers, the American ambassador and press men - before more than a hundred Palestinian and Jordanian workers rushed to the deck of the steamer and began packing the wheat in its sacks and carrying them on light barges to shore, and from there by large lorries to the railway stations and distribution centres in the southern region, so that the wheat might at once begin to be distributed to the needy among the people of the stricken areas.

Unloading and packing now proceed at the rate of eight hundred tons a day, so that it is expected that unloading the whole cargo of the steamer will take twelve days, while transport and distribution will continue until the middle of next February. This is the first time the Jordanian port of Aqaba has received an American commercial steamer.

And outside the port area .. the steamer had hardly dropped anchor before the workers set out on light barges to its deck to begin the packing operations.

Unloading and transport at their height... and here is the quay of Aqaba port crowded with workers with sacks of wheat on their backs, carrying them from the light barges to the large lorries.

On the deck of the steamer "Albion", while the wheat was being packed into sacks to be carried to the distribution centres and from there to the Jordanians stricken by the drought of the grain seasons.

Quantities of wheat were sent to the mills in Amman, from which it came out as flour to the ovens and then as appetising bread.

And the holds of the steamer were crowded with dozens of Palestinian workers who were brought from Nablus and Hebron.

And the large lorries lined up along the port quay to carry the first consignments to the distribution centres and railway stations.
