# القمح الأميركي في نجدة الليبيين (American Wheat to the Aid of the Libyans) (Arabic photo-set poster distributed in Benghazi)

A landscape photo-set poster with five pictures and a boxed text reporting a 2,200-ton U.S. wheat shipment on the ship Southport to Tripoli, Libya. Pictures show sacks being unloaded and a handover ceremony with U.S. and Libyan flags. The text gives its cost as about a quarter of a million dollars. The tell is transfer and virtue words: the relief is attached to the U.S. Government, and it is described as showing the 'sympathy of the American people'.

AMERICAN WHEAT TO THE AID OF THE LIBYANS

The American Government contributed to relieving the wheat crisis in Libya and sent 2,200 tons of wheat to ward off the spectre of famine that had nearly struck some regions of the Libyan Kingdom.

On 30 December 1953 this quantity, about 49 thousand sacks in number, was packed in sacks and loaded on the ship "Southport" at the city of Houston in the state of Texas. The ship set sail on its way to Tripoli and reached it on 25 January last.

This cargo was unloaded from the ship, the "wheat carrier", in three days, and large lorries undertook to ship it to the various regions of the Kingdom, while the Libyan Development and Stabilisation Agency distributed the cargo to the needy areas.

This quantity suffices to feed 8 thousand families, or nearly 40 thousand persons, for three months .. and so the Libyan people are able to await the coming harvest seasons without worry.

This gift cost the American Government nearly a quarter of a million dollars, that is about 80 thousand Libyan pounds.

This humanitarian act on the part of the American Government indicates the sympathy of the American people and their concern for the people of Libya, who are striving to build the edifice of a strong nation.

The American Minister hands over the wheat to Mr Abd al-Razzaq Shaqlub, delegate of the Libyan government.

When the steamer "Southport" reached Tripoli port, the workers began to move from it the American wheat cargo, weighing 2,200 tons, to lorries in preparation for sending it to the stricken areas.

The American Minister delivers his address at the handing over of the wheat to the government delegate in the presence of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and some senators and deputies.

The unloading of the American wheat cargo from the steamer "Southport" took three full days, during which the workers showed every activity to speed the unloading of this cargo - 49 thousand sacks - and its dispatch at once to the needy centres.
