# Anba' Moussawarah (Pictorial News) No. 19/54: News in Pictures (illustrated news sheet distributed in Beirut)

A paste-up photo page headed 'News in Pictures', footer dated May 13, 1954: an Indian physician examining a child at Tulane University with a U.S. colleague, Nehru arriving by helicopter at an Indian Air Force display, and the first U.S. experimental atomic-electric power plant. The tell is card-stacking: medical exchange and atomic power are selected as signs of U.S. technical leadership.

NEWS IN PICTURES

TROPICAL DISEASES are studied by Dr. R.J. Amruthraj (left) of India, a visiting physician in the United States. Here, the Indian and an American medical officer examine a young patient at Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Work continues at night at the experimental atomic-electric power plant.

Electric light bulbs glow, showing the first known use of electric power generated with atomic energy. Below, a technician adjusts one of the massive pumps at the plant.

First production of electricity through use of nuclear fission has been successful in the United States. Now the Atomic Energy Commission plans to build five new large-scale reactors of varying size and cost during the next five years. The aim is the economic extraction of usable electric power from the atom. The first experimental power plant uses atomic energy to heat water, and turns power turbines with the resulting steam.

INDIAN AIR FORCE CELEBRATES

Indian Prime Minister Nehru arrives by helicopter to inaugurate the fire-power demonstration by the Indian Air Force, celebrating its 21st anniversary.

Jet fighter called "Toofani" fires a stream of powerful rockets.

Paratroop drop was a feature of the Indian display near Delhi.
