# "The Awakening" (Puck centerfold, 20 February 1915)

A torch-bearing woman labelled 'Votes for Women' strides eastward across a map of the United States, the western states shaded where women already vote, toward women reaching out to her. The tell: a map and a Liberty-style figure turn state-by-state lawmaking into a procession that seems certain to go on.

Puck Publishing Corporation ran this centerfold on 20 February 1915, with a poem by Alice Duer Miller beneath. A torch-bearing woman labelled 'Votes for Women' strides eastward across a map of the United States, the western states shaded where women already vote, toward women reaching out to her. Bandwagon and transfer are tagged: the map and a Liberty-style figure turn state-by-state lawmaking into a procession that seems certain to continue.
