# FBIS Daily Report: 'Beijing Mayor on Role of University Students' (Xinhua Domestic Service, 23 Dec 1986)

Page R 3 of the FBIS Daily Report for the PRC (issue of 24 December 1986) with a Xinhua Domestic Service item on Beijing mayor Chen Xitong's get-together with student cultural activists, citing 100,000 students in art festivals. It does not mention the student demonstrations that other items in the same issue (AFP, Kyodo, Hong Kong press) report, an instance of selection and omission.

One said Chinese workers "still thought differently from students," and that thousands of workers that had joined student demonstrations in Shanghai "were thinking more about their low pay and rising prices than about democracy."

BEIJING MAYOR ON ROLE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
OW231652 Beijing XINHUA Domestic Service in Chinese 1424 GMT 23 Dec 86
[By reporters He Qing and Zhang Huixian]
[Text] Beijing, 23 Dec (XINHUA) -- Chen Xitong, mayor of Beijing Municipality, this evening attended a get-together of cultural activists of schools of higher learning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to greet the coming New Year's Day. He said to the students: "I hope you will cherish the fine conditions provided by the people and study hard to be ready to make contributions to China's four modernizations."
More than 500 cultural activists from some 70 schools of higher learning in Beijing, including those from Beijing University and Qinghua University, attended this evening's get-together. Since early December, schools of higher learning in Beijing have held cultural activities and art festivals. More than 100,000 university students have taken part in those cultural activities including performances of theatrical works, singing, dancing, and writing poems.
He Dongchang, vice minister in charge of the State Education Commission, and Wang Meng, minister of culture, both praised and affirmed university students' enthusiasm and talent in holding art festivals. They are convinced that those activities have enriched university students' cultural life and have a positive meaning in raising university students' cultural level. Li Ximing, secretary of the Beijing Municipal CPC Committee, was among those who attended this evening's get-together.
