THE BOMBAY CHRONICLE. TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 1919.

AMRITSAR AND LAHORE RIOTS.
MORE THAN 30 MEN KILLED.
(ASSOCIATED PRESS.)
LAHORE, April 13.
The following press communique has been issued:-
As various exaggerated and misleading reports appear to be in circulation regarding the disturbances which have lately taken place at Amritsar and Lahore, the following authoritative account is published:-
On the early morning of the 10th orders under the Defence of India (consolidation) Rules were served on Doctors Saifuddin Kitchlew, and Satya Pal, two local agitators, whose speeches and activities during the previous few weeks combined to bring about a state of general unrest in Amritsar. They were removed by motor and train shortly before 11 a.m. News of these arrests rapidly spread through the city. A large crowd numbering possibly ten or twenty thousand thereupon collected, and endeavoured to rush the Civil Lines. [column continues; not transcribed further]

MR. MAZHARUL HAQUE[stray mark] RESIGNS.
SEQUEL TO DELHI TRAGEDY.
HIS CONDEMNATION OF OFFICIAL WHITEWASHING.
Mr. Mazharul Haque, who publicly announced his intention of resigning his seat in the Imperial Legislative Council the other day "for no co-operation was possible with a Government which tolerated what had happened at Delhi", has sent the following letter to the Viceroy, tendering his resignation:
My Lord,
I have read with profound sorrow of the tragic events which were enacted in the capital of India on the 30th March last. Innocent people were shot down because they were holding a peaceful demonstration against an unpopular measure of the Government of India. Your Excellency's Executive Government has thought fit to endorse the version given by the local authorities and to exonerate them from all blame, without holding any enquiry as to the correctness or otherwise of it. Unfortunately the officials don't recognise the changed condition of India, and they still carry on the administration of the country according to their old out-of-date methods in which the people count not. Such action amounts to a negation of all good and orderly Government. Under these circumstances I feel that I can no longer serve with any advantage as a councillor of your Excellency's Government and, therefore, respectfully place my resignation in Your Lordship's hands.
I am,
My Lord,
Your Most Obedient Servant,
M. HAQUE.
