# The Bombay Gazette, 17 October 1905, page 5: "The Partition of Bengal" and the Swadeshi meeting in Bombay

Anglo-Indian daily's report on the day the Partition of Bengal took effect. It prints the Calcutta correspondent's account of a day of mourning ('Bengalis in Calcutta mourning') beside the Shillong correspondent's 'public rejoicings' that 'afford a striking proof of the popularity of the new Lieutenant-Governor'. Tell: festivities in the new capital are offered as proof of the public mood, while the opposing demonstration is reported on the same page.

THE BOMBAY GAZETTE, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1905.

THE PARTITION OF BENGAL.
BENGALIS IN CALCUTTA MOURNING.
SHILLONG REJOICES.
APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS.
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
CALCUTTA, Oct. 16.
To-day being the Partition day both the European and the Native Police were strongly posted in every quarter of the town to preserve peace. The European constabulary were reinforced by 100 soldiers from the Fort, 25 of whom were sent to protect the Mint and the remainder kept as standby in Police Head-Quarters.
The Bengalis throughout the City observed the day as one of mourning. All Native shopkeepers closed their establishments. No fish was sold in the Municipal market from where the Europeans get their supply, and the Bengali grocers and dairymen closed after midday. Thousands of Bengalis went early this morning to the river bank, bathed and marched through the streets shouting "Bande Mataram". All were barefooted and bareheaded and wore the "bani" band, a yellow dyed thread round their wrists. Bands of men travelled in the tram cars singing national songs and shouting "Bande Mataram."
In the afternoon the foundation stone of the Federation Hall was laid in the presence of an immense crowd.
No attempt at a disturbance is reported up to 6 p.m.
The Mahomedans generally took no part in the day's proceedings.
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
SHILLONG, Oct. 16.
The creation of the new province of Eastern Bengal and Assam was formally inaugurated at Shillong, this morning, by the issue of a "Gazette Extraordinary" notifying the various appointments to the chief posts in the new Government. [...] An explanatory resolution is issued by Mr. Fuller, the new Lieutenant-Governor, and ends with the words: "The new province has been created with the object of improving the moral and material conditions of over 30 millions of people, [...]"
It is clear that Assam welcomes the dignity of its inclusion in an enlarged province and the people of Eastern Bengal of all classes have contributed largely to the great number of congratulatory messages and telegrams that have been reaching Mr. Fuller [...]
The public rejoicings and illuminations which are taking place at Shillong to-day afford a striking proof of the popularity of the new Lieutenant-Governor amongst the people who have had occasion to become best acquainted with him.

THE SWADESHI MOVEMENT.
DEMONSTRATION IN BOMBAY.
On Sunday afternoon a large and uproarious meeting of Hindus was held in the open compound of Jaoji Building, Chikal Wady, at Tardeo, with the object of making a demonstration in favour of the Swadeshi movement, which has been initiated and fostered by the Babus and others to mark their resentment in the matter of the Partition of Bengal. The meeting was attended by from three to four thousand Hindus under the leadership of Mr. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who had specially come down from Poona. [...]
Mr. Tilak, in addressing the meeting, dwelt at length on the advantages to the country from the success of the movement. He remarked that some of the English papers, instead of leading the public were misleading them [printed 'then']. [remainder not transcribed]
