# Men of Valor: They Fight for You [3]

A Canadian-shouldered airman shields his eyes at a shattered cockpit window, with a swastika-marked convoy ship below, over a citation for Squadron-Leader Ralph McLaren Christie, R.C.A.F., awarded the D.S.O. The named award transfers a decorated airman's prestige to the home-front viewer ('They fight for you'), and 'skill and daring of high degree' is a virtue phrase.

```
MEN of VALOR
They fight for you
“FOR SKILL AND DARING OF HIGH DEGREE”
F/L (now Squadron-Leader) Ralph McLaren Christie, R.C.A.F., was awarded the D.S.O. He led a force of bombers in an attack on a heavily armed enemy convoy off the Dutch coast. Though his aircraft was seriously damaged and difficult to control he pressed home the attack at deck level, then returned to base and made a skillful crash landing.
