# Americans of Czechoslovak Descent

A numbered pamphlet page with five captioned photographs (an Illinois farm family at table, a Sokol gymnastic display, a woman war worker at a drill press, the Czechoslovak pavilion at the New York World's Fair, schoolchildren greeting President Benes) beside a text on Czech and Slovak settlers in the United States. The tell for plain-folks is the farm family and the factory worker presented as ordinary Americans; the tell for glittering-generalities is the text's 'American way of life' and 'American Liberty'.

```
Czech, Slovak and Carpathian-Russian settlers have been coming to America since the 17th century. Most of them fled political and religious oppression, as for instance, the Moravian Brethren who still profess their faith here. There are now almost two million Americans of Czechoslovak ancestry in the United States, equally distributed among all walks of life.
Their Gymnastic Sokol Movement has made most of them fit to serve their country in today's struggle in all branches of service. They have a large representation in industry and have an appropriate share in the common war effort.
The teachings of their leaders in the old country and their democratic inheritance has enabled them to adapt themselves quickly to the American way of life. Today they realize very well what they are fighting for in helping to preserve American Liberty.
