# Filipino Students Look at America poster No. 2 (English, Manila)

Photographs from the 'My Impressions of America' contest sponsored by the Photographic Society of America: a boy raking leaves, a football game, a boy at a mailbox and a hamburger counter, each with a quoted caption and a portrait of the Filipino student who took it. A text box ties the contest to President Eisenhower's People-to-People program. The tell is plain-folks: everyday American scenes seen through Filipino students' eyes, with praise in captions ('the best efforts of a man are his honest, sincere labors').

FILIPINO STUDENTS Look At AMERICA

"DIGNITY OF LABOR"
"LITTLE SANDY goes about his task unashamed to work for pay, but it would be unthinkable in many countries. Maybe that is why so many nations seem to take themselves lightly...not starting young enough to learn that the best efforts of a man are his honest, sincere labors."
Dani Dumuk-Aguila
Bauang, La Union, Philippines

"GROWING RESPONSIBILITY"
"YOUNG JOHN DOE, the kid next door, is typical of young America, willing to accept responsibilities entrusted by loved ones, friends and the community. An errand here and there, insignificantly small, mayhaps, but certainly when added up together make the sum total of what he can contribute...to the future, America's leadership may perhaps be reflected in this scene of a boy, reaching for the mail box, eagerly, willingly, cheerfully."

"SIX POINTS"
"The American craze for football...the touchdown."
Mario L. Santaromana
Quezon City, Philippines

"THE AMERICAN AND HIS DRINK"
Edgardo O. Alzate
Manila, Philippines

THE FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS shown here were among seventy-four prize-winning and other entries in the "My Impressions of America" contest sponsored by the Photographic Society of America. The contest was open to all of the 36,000 foreign students enrolled in American educational institutions.
The photographs entered in the contest presented a new and fresh picture of America. The contest was one of the first projects developed under the People-to-People program inaugurated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to encourage better understanding among peoples of all nations.
