# Food for Peace poster, Upper Volta (French poster distributed in Beirut)

A French-language photo poster headlined with a quotation from Dr. Paul Lambin, Upper Volta's Minister of Public Health: world health as an essential condition of world peace. Six photographs show American milk powder and flour in a warehouse, schoolchildren queuing for porridge, Catholic Relief Service staff and local workers; the central text describes the U.S. Food for Peace programme in fifteen African countries. The tell is testimonial, a minister's maxim as the frame, and transfer: a U.S. flag beside the Upper Volta outline.

LA SANTE MONDIALE:
CONDITION ESSENTIELLE DE LA PAIX MONDIALE"

DR. PAUL LAMBIN

"WORLD HEALTH: ESSENTIAL CONDITION OF WORLD PEACE" Dr. Paul Lambin, Minister of Public Health, Republic of Upper Volta. Fifteen African countries are at present cooperating with the United States of America on a special project intended to improve and protect the health of their citizens. Using the food supplied to them under the American 'Bread for Peace' [Food for Peace] programme, these fifteen governments have set up a system of daily distribution to nursery schools, the sick and families hit by drought and poor harvests. The programme resembles school-meal and emergency-relief services. In Upper Volta supply is carried out by Catholic Relief Service and government workers. To ensure the health of future generations, the Upper Volta government wisely began with the nursery school, making sure the children there receive their ration of milk and maize every day. These children will one day be the teachers, workers and officials of the country. Their good health will be that of Upper Volta itself. The government has not, however, neglected elderly citizens who, through illness or age, can no longer work, and those who, by a whim of nature, were left with no harvest and so no food. A distribution is organised for the old at various points across the country. Emergency relief is sent without delay to the hardest-hit districts and to those that received food after a long period of drought. More than one hundred thousand people are fed each year under this programme. Upper Volta, recognising the truth of Dr. Lambin's maxim, spares no effort to improve the lot of its citizens. Photo captions: American powdered milk and wheat flour arrive at and leave the warehouse without pause; boys in schools queue for a midday meal of porridge and milk; Fr. Roger Bisson, American White Father, directs Catholic Relief Service in Upper Volta with assistants Leopold Bassono and Augustus Monti; Mmes Marie Pilaipa and Marie Jeanne Bonhaemgon prepare the midday porridge for students of the College de la Salle; M. Joachim Ouedraogo of the Mairie and M. Tapsoba Antoine open a sack of maize that will be the meal of twenty families of Ouagadougou; Brother Sylvain and M. Sankara Rene supervise the family distribution held almost daily at the College de la Salle.
