# Fuel Economy in the Foundry - Hints to Foremen for Saving Fuel - Save Fuel for Battle!

A text-heavy instruction sheet gives foremen five working rules and a maintenance schedule for foundry furnaces under the headline 'Fuel Economy in the Foundry'. Only the closing line, 'Save Fuel for Battle!', ties the routine to the fighting, which is the transfer tell; the rest is technical guidance.

FUEL ECONOMY IN THE FOUNDRY
Hints to Foremen for saving Fuel

A WORKING
Plan to work the furnaces at high efficiency. Thus-
1 Run the smallest number of furnaces which will keep pace with moulding.
2 Have enough moulds made at a time to use a full pot of metal at each pouring.
3 Avoid short runs of different metals.
4 If possible work men in shifts to avoid cooling and reheating furnaces.
5 Help the men to keep their rules.

B MAINTENANCE
Make a definite routine of maintenance.
Don't wait for something to go wrong before taking any action.

The schedule gives periods for normal conditions.
Under special conditions more frequent attention will be necessary.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
ITEM | EACH DAY | EACH WEEK | EVERY FOUR MONTHS
Flues | | Rake out dust. | Examine for air leaks and repair.
Linings | | Examine and check with template for wear. Patch where necessary. | Remake the entire lining.
Grate | | See that furnace bottom ironwork is in good condition. See that proper number of bars are in place. | Examine thoroughly. Check clearance and straightness of bars.
Covers | | Keep these an airtight fit. | Renew where necessary.
Ash Pit Open type | | Clean pit. Removable trays are a help. | Examine trays. Check space below grate.
Ash Pit Individual or divided type | Clean each section in use. | |
