# Gazette of the United States, "The Jeffersoniad" no. VIII, 14 August 1800

Page 2 of a Philadelphia Federalist daily carrying 'The Jeffersoniad', a reprinted essay attacking Thomas Jefferson over the 'Mazzei letter'. Tells: party labels as insults ('abominable faction', 'Jacobin chieftain', 'hypocrites') and the closing warning that the opposing party's real aim is to 'overturn and destroy' the constitution.

Gazette of the United States.
PHILADELPHIA,
THURSDAY EVENING, AUGUST 14.

POLITICAL.
From the Boston Columbian Centinel.
THE JEFFERSONIAD.
N. VIII.

[...]

Thus almost by a miracle, we are in possession of the views and wicked designs of a most abominable faction. Lastly, This letter was charged upon Mr. Jefferson in 1797, in language the most plain and with remarks the most criminating. It was viewed by all men of all parties as the most imprudent and by all honest men, as the most scandalous declaration of political sentiments ever exhibited to the world. It was justly esteemed so infamous and so derogatory to the dignity of Mr. Jefferson's character, that a simple public denial on his part would have refuted it.

[...]

I shall conclude the present number by a paraphrase of this last sentiment of this Jacobin chieftain; "The avowed object of the Jacobins in this country is to protect liberty and support the constitution; their real aim, is to introduce Gallic licentiousness and overturn and destroy the empire of the constitution and the laws."---I shall pursue this subject in my next.
"DECIUS."

Eighteenth-century long-s read as modern s; passages marked [...] are omitted, not illegible. The scan is dark and dense, so only the headline block and two passages from the right-hand columns are transcribed.
