# Cover of 'Ghadar di Gunj' (Ghadar Press, San Francisco, March 1914)

Cover of a pamphlet of Punjabi patriotic verse: a woman with a drawn sword stands before a spear, quiver and rifle, beside a large animal hide with a lion's head, under three banners reading 'First death', 'Bande Mataram', 'Afterwards freedom'. The tell is the devotional motherland-and-warrior imagery attached to a slogan of sacrifice, which transfers the prestige of the sacred and the heroic onto armed resistance.

Handwritten-style Shahmukhi lettering; the title block and banners are clear, the small labels and the bottom oval are only partly legible and are marked rather than guessed. The reading of the print-run word is the transcriber's best reading. Translation by Claude, not verified by a fluent reader.
