# Sanitation Campaign in Gia Dinh Province

A landscape photo sheet under a red headline reports a public sanitation campaign launched in Gia Định province in June 1966 to prevent epidemics from rubbish piled in alleys. Photographs show officials and neighbours loading a handcart, a bulldozer marked U.S. Army clearing a heap, and a worker pasting a campaign poster. The tell is volunteers setting an example, with the USAID vehicles named as plain fact.

GIA-ĐỊNH LAUNCHES A PUBLIC SANITATION CAMPAIGN

IN THE FIRST TEN DAYS OF JUNE 1966, GIA-ĐỊNH PROVINCE LAUNCHED A SANITATION CAMPAIGN IN ALL THE QUARTERS IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE HEALTH OF THE COMPATRIOTS, ABOVE ALL TO PREVENT INFECTIOUS DISEASES THAT COULD BREAK OUT AND SPREAD FROM FILTHY HEAPS OF RUBBISH DUMPED CARELESSLY AT ALLEY ENTRANCES BY SOME THOUGHTLESS PEOPLE.

THREE-WHEELED CARTS, CIVIL SERVANTS AND SOME COMPATRIOTS OF THE HAMLETS AND NEIGHBOURHOODS VOLUNTEERED TO GO ALONG THE STREET PAVEMENTS TO COLLECT RUBBISH, SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR THE COMPATRIOTS TO BE AWARE OF KEEPING THE PUBLIC HYGIENE, AS WELL AS AT HOME.

THERE WAS TOO MUCH RUBBISH; THE STAFF AND RUBBISH TRUCKS OF THE PUBLIC WORKS SERVICE ARE LIMITED AND DID NOT MEET THE NEED, SO SOME BULLDOZERS AND EARTH-HAULING TRUCKS OF THE USAID AGENCY WERE MOBILISED TO HELP THIS CAMPAIGN.

THE PROVINCE AND DISTRICT CADRES, AS WELL AS THOSE OF THE VILLAGES AND HAMLETS, COOPERATED AND BROUGHT SUCCESS. MANY PEOPLE VOLUNTEERED TO GO AND PASTE CAMPAIGN POSTERS FOR THE CAMPAIGN.

The lettering on this sheet is an uneven display type, so some diacritics were read with difficulty and may differ from the printed marks. Text inside the photographs (the handcart banner and the poster on the wall) is partly legible and is not transcribed beyond the words 'CHIẾN DỊCH' on the cart; a vehicle marking reads 'U.S. ARMY'.
