# "Goods will be so much cheaper"--Democratic argument. But what will become of all the American industries?

Full-page cartoon from Judge, 22 September 1888. A giant top-hatted figure stands at a door marked "Protection" from which a flood labelled "European pauper manufactures" pours over a valley of factories labelled "American factory"; the caption quotes the Democratic argument and asks what becomes of American industries. The flood is staged as imminent harm (fear-appeal) and "pauper" is a loaded label for European goods (name-calling). It argues the Republican position and is grouped on that side.
