# In a Changing World poster (English, distributed in India)

An English-language panel poster headed 'In a Changing World', quoting Secretary of State John Foster Dulles of 18 November 1958 above six 'change' panels: colonialism to independence, the polar region, physical power, outer space and anarchy to order, with photographs of a speaker, two engineers, a polar map, a cancer-treatment machine, a rocket and the UN building. The tell is card-stacking: chosen U.S. activities are presented as the world's progress.

```
“...in a Changing world”
“The world ‘is living and therefore changing’ and consequently an attempt to freeze any order of society ‘is bound, in the long run, to jeopardise the peace of mankind’.”
18 November 1958, Cleveland, Ohio. U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles
Change from colonialism to independence
“The United States supports political independence for all peoples who desire it ...”
“We provide technical assistance ...so that others may learn how to help themselves achieve a better life.”
Change in the unexplored polar regions
“The Arctic now offers the new routes whereby men can quickly establish contact with each other.”
On 5 August 1958 the American atomic-powered submarine Nautilus with 116 men aboard travelled beneath the polar ice cap, and was continuously under water for a total distance of 1830 miles.
Change in the world of physical power
“ ... We continue to develop ... the peaceful uses of atomic energy.”
At Columbia University, New York, a patient lies beneath the theatron, a powerful machine which uses radioactive cobalt for the treatment of cancer.
Change in the firmament above us
“The United States has begun planning for the use of the newly-penetrated realm of outer space...”
On 11 October 1958 the U.S. moon-probe rocket “Pioneer” was launched, reaching an unprecedented height of 79,000 miles.
Change from anarchy to order
“The United States has endeavoured, by its own example and by its expositions in the United Nations, to emphasise the importance of law and justice.”
