# Vice President Ky Reconnoiters the Road Opening on National Route One, Binh Tuy

A six-photo sheet reports Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky's visit on the morning of 19 December 1967 to a road-clearing operation on National Route 1 in Binh Tuy: a tank carrying soldiers, allied troops repairing a bridge, a briefing by the province chief, a welcome banner and a bus bound for Saigon. The text says the road had been closed for three years by Viet Cong sabotage, causing nearly 200 deaths. The tell: the road's reopening is credited to the Republic of Vietnam army and its allies and tied to the visiting leader's presence.

VICE PRESIDENT NGUYEN CAO-KY
REVIEWS THE ROAD-OPENING OPERATION
ON NATIONAL ROUTE 1 AND PROVINCIAL ROAD 2 OF BINH-TUY

NATIONAL ROUTE 1, THE VITAL ARTERY RUNNING THE LENGTH OF VIETNAM THROUGH BINH-TUY PROVINCE, HAS BEEN CUT TO TRAFFIC FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS BY THE VIET CONG'S SABOTAGE AND PLUNDER, MAKING THE PEOPLE OF BINH-TUY PROVINCE SUFFER GREATLY, HAVING TO TRAVEL BY VERY DANGEROUS FERRY EACH TIME. IN THE PAST 3 YEARS HUNDREDS OF ACCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED, KILLING NEARLY 200 PEOPLE AND DAMAGING HUNDREDS OF TONS OF GOODS. TODAY, THANKS TO THE ARVN AND ALLIED ARMIES' OPENING OPERATION, TRAVEL AND TRADE FOR THE PEOPLE HAVE BECOME EASY.

On the morning of 19-12-67, Vice President NGUYEN CAO-KY observed from an armoured vehicle the operation to open Route 1 from Long-khanh to Binh-tuy.

Allied troops are helping repair the bridges and road on Route 1 to restore traffic.

The Lieutenant-Colonel Province Chief of Binh-tuy briefs the Vice President on the security situation and the plan for the operation to open provincial road 2 linking Ham-tan with Route 1.

After reviewing the work of opening Route 1 and Provincial Road 2 of Binh-tuy, the Vice President visited Binh-tuy province.

With security assured, the National Route open and vehicles running, travel for the people of Binh-tuy to Saigon or other provinces is very convenient.
