Front page of the first issue of the Madrid daily La Tierra, printed four days after the Jaca rising (12 December 1930) and the day after the Cuatro Vientos airfield revolt (15 December). The lead headline, 'The Government states that normality is being restored', sits over the two government 'notas oficiosas'. The tell: a boxed 'Lector' note on the same page says the paper's most prominent information on the events 'has to be framed in semi-official notes', so the account of the risings is limited to the authorities' version.

DOS NOTAS OFICIOSAS

Lector:

TWO SEMI-OFFICIAL NOTES

Reader:
The events of the forty-eight hours before the appearance of LA TIERRA bring about a complete alteration in the making of our first issue. This is not the newspaper we had prepared when joining the ranks of the Press. But circumstances command us imperatively, and we must abide by their command.
We wait for normality to be restored so as to place ourselves, efficiently and expressively, in spiritual contact with opinion. Today we can only make a daily whose most prominent and throbbing information on the present moment has to be framed in semi-official notes.
We think it very important to record the above warning, and while we ask the benevolence of our readers, we send a cordial greeting to the Spanish Press

Photo captions: "A steep and imposing gorge on the road from Ayerbe to Jaca, where some of the rebel forces made a stand." / "JACA.-Square near the Civil Guard barracks, where the revolutionaries had their first encounter with the Civil Guard."
```
Masthead, boxed statements, the lead headline and subheads, the 'Lector' box and photo captions only; the long body columns (including the two 'notas oficiosas' and the Julio Burell column) are not transcribed. Spelling follows the print (e.g. 'Prensa', 'confección').
