# 'The Personality of E. C. McCullough & Co.': Manila printer's advertisement, The Philippine Review, 1920

A full-page text advertisement by a Manila printing firm tells a founder's story, reports an offer to split profits 'fifty-fifty' with employees, and says the firm's men love its service 'despite the petty hindrances of agitators'. It ends by asking readers to use their influence for 'these high ideals'. The label 'agitators' and the phrases 'human kindness and fellowship' are the tells.

THE PHILIPPINE REVIEW

The Personality of E. C. McCullough & Co.

Over twenty years ago, E. C. McCullough started a tiny print-shop in Manila, and there, with two or three employees, began the business which to-day is the largest of its kind in the Orient.
Mr. E. C. McCullough—a practical dreamer—imagined a great business, and securing the services of the most efficient men available, wrought steadily until the dream became a reality.
And when his dream came true he was still unsatisfied. The picture seemed incomplete. So he turned his thoughts to the men with whom he had toiled shoulder to shoulder, up the long trail of successful achievements.. Said he, "You furnish the labor, I will furnish the capital, and I will split the profits fifty-fifty with you." And so, with one deft stroke, the McCullough picture was tinted with the glowing shades of human kindness and fellowship between employer and employed.
The result is that, despite the petty hindrances of agitators, McCULLOUGH MEN LOVE McCULLOUGH SERVICE—and McCullough products show it. They show it in their sterling qualities—sincerity of tone, and that indefinable charm of make-up—which bespeak not merely exceptional ability, but also that unity of purpose without which the highest class of printing is impossible.
May we request that you use your influence to help us maintain these high ideals in the McCullough organization?
