# President Medvedev with the leaders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia at the signing of friendship treaties (Moscow, 17 September 2008)

Dmitry Medvedev stands between two men who each clasp one of his hands, behind a lectern with the Russian double-headed eagle, with Russian tricolours behind the man at left and the red, white and yellow South Ossetian flag behind the man at right. The tell is the Kremlin staging the leaders of two partially recognised republics under Russian state symbols, which lends the standing of the Russian presidency to their status.
