A landscape sheet headed 'New seed brings prosperity' reports that farmers in An Giang province more than doubled their income with seed introduced by a Taiwanese (Republic of China) agricultural team. Four photographs of named farmers carry captions giving income in piastres per plot, and one quotes a farmer comparing a harvest of 3 kilos of the new bean against 2 of the local kind. The tell is the named-farmer testimonial with a price attached to each, offered as a typical result.

NEW SEED BRINGS PROSPERITY

With the help of the Taiwan Agricultural Expert Team, many farmers in An-Giang province have harvested more than double the income they were able to harvest before. This good result is thanks to new Chinese seed, sometimes varieties unfamiliar to the experience of Vietnamese farmers, such as transplanted rice, soybeans, purple long beans and watermelon. These new varieties not only produce a larger quantity than a mau of the broadcast rice used before, but are also of better quality, able to bring richer income, and at the same time some of the varieties can be grown in several seasons each year.

76,500 piastres, INCOME FROM ONE AND A HALF MAU. This is the income that Mr. Phan-van-Quoi of Thoi-Thanh hamlet, Thot-Not district, harvested by growing transplanted rice instead of broadcast rice. Moreover this new rice grows so fast that Mr. Quoi can grow 2 crops a year. In the picture Mr. Quoi is discussing the harvest results with the Chinese experts.

8,000 piastres. INCOME FROM A TENTH OF A MAU. Here Mr. Le-van-Thiet and his family are picking soybeans. Mr. Thiet can grow this bean in 2 seasons a year.

80,000 piastres, INCOME FROM 4/10 OF A MAU. This is the income that Mr. Pham-van-Mam in Chau Thanh district harvested with the newly imported Chinese purple bean variety. Before, he grew only local beans, and comparing the harvests, he said: "I picked 3 kilos of Chinese beans while the local beans gave only 2 kilos, and on the market the purple bean sells for 3 times more".

36,000 piastres, INCOME FROM 4/10 OF A MAU. With the money from this first soybean harvest Mr. Nguyen-van-Pham has been able to send his son to university. The first person in the family to go to university. These soybean branches, after drying, will be beaten to get the beans.
