# Nông phẩm mới đem lại sự sung túc cho nhà nông tỉnh Phong-Dinh (New Crops Bring Prosperity to the Farmers of Phong Dinh Province)

A sheet (code SP-1824) reports a watermelon contest held on Con Son island on 26 January 1967 and says the Sugar Baby variety, planted there since 1959, now covers over 200 hectares in the province and returns four times as much per hectare as rice. Photographs show a named grower, Mai-Van-Minh, with prize melons, harvesting and loading a boat. A single named success and a yield figure stand in for the province's farmers.

NEW CROPS BRING PROSPERITY TO THE FARMERS OF PHONG-DINH PROVINCE

On 26 January 1967, watermelon growers in Phong-Dinh province held a watermelon contest on Con Son island to celebrate the results of this year's melon season. The Sugar Baby watermelon variety began to be planted on the island in 1959. This kind of melon sells very well, so before long many other places in the province were also growing it, and this year alone the whole province has more than 200 [mau] of Sugar Baby watermelon. This variety bears fruit very quickly, so the farmer who grows it can fit in another crop season as well. One [mau] of such upland field usually brings a profit 4 times greater than one [mau] of rice field.

Mr. Mai-Van-Minh, Thoi Phung hamlet, Thoi An village, Phong Phu district, took first prize in the watermelon contest on the island. In the picture above Mr. Minh is very happy with the results he has gathered.

The melons, once picked, are taken to market and sold at once at a good price because they keep their freshness.

Here are a few of the melons that won prizes at the contest.

Mr. Minh is happy to see that his labour has brought more abundant income than before.
