A four-picture news sheet in English. Photographs and captions show Ethiopian horsemen performing for Queen Elizabeth II, an architect's drawing of a John F. Kennedy Memorial Library at Haile Sellassie I University funded by the United States, a Peace Corps volunteer family, and a 60-panel painting of Kennedy's life by two Ethiopian artists. Gallant Horsemen Entertain Queen

Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Prince Philip saw many of the wonders of Ethiopia during their recent visit to this country but nothing was more dramatic and exciting than the performance of more than 1000 Ethiopian horsemen who performed for the royal guests in Jan Hoy Meda in Addis Ababa. The horsemen, garbed in lions' manes, leopard skins and other colorful apparel, galloped past the visitors in an almost never-ending stream and then demonstrated the traditional game of gougs. Protected by shields and brandishing spears and staffs they put on an exhibition of the brilliant horsemanship for which Ethiopians are justly famous.

New Library for University

Architect's drawing of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library to be constructed at Haile Sellassie I University in Addis Ababa. H.E. Lij Kassa Wolde-Mariam, President of the University, said it is fitting that the new library is to be named after the late American president because "he was a young President who challenged youth to contribute. It is my hope that young people at our university will live up to President Kennedy's ideals." The United States, through its Agency for International Development, is providing approximately Eth.$3 million to cover the cost of constructing and furnishing the building. Completion is scheduled for the latter part of 1965. The ultra-modern library will house 200,000 volumes. U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Edward M. Korry said the library is designed not only as a repository for books but as a place in which students will find a welcome atmosphere for study, contemplation and discussion.

Family of Four Joins Peace Corps

Dr. and Mrs. James J. Plorde and their two children were among the 118 new Peace Corps Volunteers who arrived in Ethiopia early this year. The new group of volunteers, who will serve Ethiopia in a variety of ways, brings to 550 the number of Peace Corps volunteers at work throughout the Empire. This makes the Ethiopia program the largest in Africa and the third largest in the world. The Plorde family is the largest volunteer family in Ethiopia. They are from Minnesota in the United States. Dr. Plorde is a graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Medicine and is doing medical work in Ethiopia. Mrs. Plorde is a graduate of Arizona State University and is teaching home economics in Ethiopia.

Kennedy's Life Shown in "Sheba" Painting

A 60-panel "Sheba-style" painting showing highlights of the life of the late President John F. Kennedy and describing in pictures the visits of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I to the United States in 1963 has been painted by two young Ethiopian artists. Ato Girma Belachew, 22, (right) and his assistant, Ato Tedros Bekele, 21, have sent the painting to the new Kennedy Memorial Library at Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a symbol of Ethiopian-American friendship. The artists spent four months painting the colorful scenes. They conceived and executed the painting entirely by themselves and worked largely from photographs. The painting starts with the birth of the late President and ends with his tragic death and funeral.
