Book Reports on Ethiopia
The scenic and artistic beauties of Ethiopia are being enjoyed by thousands of people around the world. And their enjoyment is resulting in a number of beneficial social welfare activities in Ethiopia. Photos of Ethiopian scenes, paintings, cultural and religious events, historic sites and Ethiopian people are included in a profusely illustrated calendar booklet published by the women of the American community in Addis Ababa; 7,000 copies of the 150 page booklet were sold and sent as Christmas presents to people all over the world. Proceeds from the sale of the booklets totalled approximately Eth.$14,500. This money is being used by the American Women's Community in support of a number of philanthropic projects in Ethiopia.

Peace Corps Program in Ethiopia is Now the Largest in Africa
Peace Corps Volunteer Mary Oglesby ladles out free milk, donated by the people of the United States through the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, to students at the Ras Gobena Secondary School in Ghion. Peace Corps Volunteers at the school distribute the milk every day during the lunch period. Mary, a graduate of the University of Colorado, is one of over 500 Peace Corps Volunteers who are teaching in all parts of the Empire. There are a total of approximately 550 volunteers in Ethiopia thus making the Ethiopian Peace Corps program the largest in Africa and the third largest in the world.

New Veterinary Laboratory is Opened
The new, ultra-modern Veterinary Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture is expected to play a vital role in the development of the livestock industry in Ethiopia. Dedicated recently by His Imperial Majesty, the laboratory, located at Debra Zeit, will be a focal point in the battle against animal diseases. Built at a cost of Eth.$582,000 supplied by the United States Agency for International Development, the laboratory will have two principal functions. It will produce serums for livestock vaccination and will carry on diagnostic work in animal diseases. The latter activity includes work with poultry as well as livestock.

Court Official Receives Braille Typewriter
Ato Yohannes Giday, right, senior interpreter of the Supreme Court in Addis Ababa, recently was given a "Perkins Brailler" from the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts, U.S.A. The gift from the private American institution was presented to Ato Yohannes by William B. Davis (left), cultural attache of the American embassy in Ethiopia. The "Perkins Brailler" is a typewriter which "prints" in Braille characters which sightless persons can "read". Ato Yohannes told Mr. Davis: "This is indeed a very useful gift, since it will enable me to express my views to my fellow blind people everywhere. This machine encourages me to hope that men will work harder to devise similar machines to help more handicapped people."
