# Nixon with the edited White House tape transcripts

President Nixon addresses the nation beside stacked binders of edited transcripts of his White House tapes, released in place of the recordings that the House Judiciary Committee and the Watergate special prosecutor had subpoenaed. A large, partial record was offered as full disclosure. The Supreme Court ordered the tapes themselves handed over three months later, and one of them, from 23 June 1972, led to his resignation.

The stacked binder spines and the upright volume's cover clearly carry printed text (lines under a presidential seal on the upright volume, one line per binder spine), but at this photograph's resolution the letters are not resolvable even after cropping and upscaling — they render as unreadable blurs, not legible characters. Not transcribed rather than guessed, per the archive's no-guessing rule.
