# Outlook poster, Preparing to Serve Their Countries (English poster distributed in Accra)

A photo spread headed 'Preparing to Serve Their Countries', with eight captioned portraits of African students at U.S. colleges labelled doctor, pathologist, cotton expert, lawyer, teacher and language specialist, each with a quoted ambition. The tell is testimonial: the students' own quoted words stand in for the programme's case, and glittering-generalities: 'serve their countries'.

PREPARING TO SERVE THEIR COUNTRIES . . . . .

DOCTOR--Rajah Mohammed, Khartoum, Sudan, is taking a pre-medical course at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She plans to attend Harvard Medical School. "I am very ambitious," Miss Mohammed said, "There are only a few Sudanese women who are doctors and I think more of my countrywomen should become doctors."

PATHOLOGIST--Zaitan Kanji of Tanganyika, is a pre-medical student at Mount Holyoke College. Zoology and chemistry are her favorite subjects. She is still undecided whether to specialize in pathology or general medicine when she attends medical school. "Whatever I specialize in," she says, "will fill a need--there are not nearly enough pathologists or doctors in Tanganyika."

COTTON EXPERT--Aloys Barakikana of Burundi is majoring in agricultural economics at the University of Arizona. "I was raised on a farm," he said "and a lot of agricultural organization is needed in Burundi." Mr. Karakikana's major interest is cotton production and marketing. He is a member of the International People-to-People program, which introduces new students from other countries to American campus life and customs. Mr. Barakikana enjoys the social atmosphere of the university's student union, where he and his American classmates frequently meet to discuss and argue subjects of mutual interest. The picture (left) shows him operating an electric calculator, and (above) making notes on cotton growth.

LAWYER--A sophomore at Mount Holyoke College, Agnes Andeson of Liberia will study law after graduating. Her plans are to practise corporation law. She may also eventually enter politics, as she thinks the women of Africa must take a more prominent part in the political affairs of their countries.

TEACHER--Sushila Shah of Tanganyika is looking forward to a career in teaching after graduating from Mount Holyoke College, where she is a senior. She is a member of the Mount Holyoke College radio staff, composed of students who write, produce and perform radio programs over nearby stations. During the summer Miss Shah works as a counselor, or supervisor at a summer camp for girls.

LANGUAGE SPECIALIST--Hama Arba of Upper Volta, seen eating lunch with classmates at Bluffton College, Bluffton, Ohio, says "studying in a foreign country is a new adventure and requires the power of adaptation." Hama has succeeded well in adapting himself to American college life, according to his faculty adviser, who says "Hama Arba has distilled what is best for him and what will be best for his country." . . . Like most American college students, Hama Arba frequently irons his own clothes, as shown in the photo above. He is majoring in languages and in the summer of 1963 taught African languages in the Foreign Service Institute in Washington, D. C.
