# Photos d'actualité poster, No. 3 (French, Beirut)

A French-language fold-out photo sheet (headed 'Photos d'actualité') of six captioned news photographs: the Paul Taubman band's concert crowd in Leopoldville, Ethiopia's award to two Americans and an Eleanor Roosevelt stamp, African journalists at a Johnson campaign rally in Baltimore, a Liberian soccer coach at Beloit College, a U.S. relay team at the Tokyo Olympics, and Martin Luther King Jr. voting in Atlanta. The tell is card-stacking: the items are selected as goodwill, achievement and civic participation, and the Nobel and Olympic names transfer prestige to them.

PHOTOS D'ACTUALITE

TAUBMAN BAND CONCERTS DRAW CROWDS
Paul Taubman runs across Baudouin Stadium in Leopoldville amid an exuberant crowd of young people who were part of the audience of 30,000 who came to the concert given by the American conductor's band. Mr. Taubman's band is on a goodwill tour that will take in some twenty countries. On more than one occasion the American musicians have invited local musicians to join them to play informally. Another of their habits, which has had great success, is to invite members of the audience to lead the band, as this young woman (at left) did in Leopoldville. The band's repertoire ranges from light classical works to marches and to Dixieland-style jazz originating in New Orleans.

ETHIOPIA HONORS TWO AMERICANS FOR SERVICES RENDERED IN AFRICA
His Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I places a gold medal around the neck of Dr William Leo Hansberry, winner of the Haile Selassie Prize for African Research. Dr Hansberry, who teaches at Hansberry College of the University of Nigeria, also received a substantial cash gift. Among other prizes awarded, a Fine Arts prize went to the Ethiopian painter Ato Afework Tekle, designer of the stamp (see below) issued in memory of the late Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt. Part of the proceeds from the sale of this stamp will go to the humanitarian programmes Mrs Roosevelt had made her own.

A LIBERIAN SOCCER STAR TRAINS THE PLAYERS OF AN AMERICAN UNIVERSITY
Phillip Robinson (kneeling), Liberian association-football star, is at present teaching the sport at Beloit College in Wisconsin (left photo). The college's management hopes that, thanks to Robinson's lessons, its team will be able to hold its own against the best in the country. In the right photo, in Tokyo, an American relay team turned in a brilliant performance at the 1964 Olympic Games. The four runners, who covered the 1600 m relay in 3 minutes 07 seconds, thus set a new Olympic and world record.

THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER VOTES FOR THE PRESIDENT
Pastor Martin Luther King, 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner, casts his ballot in Atlanta, Georgia, in the American elections. Dr King is one of the most active leaders of the civil rights movement in the United States, which was to lead to the enactment of the 1964 civil rights law. Aged 35, Dr King is the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the second Black man and the fourteenth American citizen to be so honored. Dr King declared that the equivalent of the prize, nearly 54,000 dollars, would be used to promote the civil rights cause.
