# Pictorial Review No. 17: Haile Selassie I Military Academy at Harar (Amharic-English poster distributed in Addis Ababa)

A bilingual Amharic-English photo sheet on the inauguration of the Haile Selassie I Military Academy at Harar on 6 October 1958. Photographs show the Emperor unveiling a plaque, inspecting and saluting cadets and receiving a trophy from an Indian general; the text names Indian officers on the staff and thanks Ethiopian ministries and the U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group. The tell is transfer: the Emperor's and the plaque's formal authority is attached to the academy and the foreign assistance named.

The new Haile Selassie I Military Academy at Harar will, when the wishes of Emperor Haile Selassie I are fulfilled, serve as a high level training center not only for Ethiopia's future Army officers, but also for young men from friendly neighbouring countries.
In dedicating the Academy during October, His Imperial Majesty said that the officer cadets "will constitute an impregnable bulwark against those who would violate Ethiopia's glorious tradition of liberty which, for centuries, has been handed down from generation to generation."
His Majesty extended special thanks to Prime Minister Nehru of India for the assignment of a "fine team of officers to staff" the Academy. Col. N.S. Rawley, Indian Army Officer and Commandant of the Academy, called attention to the "considerable assistance which has been given to us by all Ministries and Departments of the Imperial Ethiopian Government and the United States Military Assistance Advisory Group in Ethiopia."
