# Pictorial Review, Volume II, Number 3: UN Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa (Amharic-English poster distributed in Addis Ababa)

A bilingual Amharic-English picture-sheet on the first sessions of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa. Nine numbered photographs show the Parliament building, the opening session, the Emperor greeted by the UN Secretary-General, the chairman and executive secretary, and delegates from Sudan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana and Guinea. The text notes that observers, including the United States, offered to assist. The tell is transfer: the sheet reports a UN event and links the US to it as an offering observer.

PICTORIAL REVIEW

Volume II Number 3

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa held its first sessions in Addis Ababa early in January. Delegates adopted 14 resolutions designed to promote economic development of the African continent.
His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I, formally opened the conference, held in Parliament (see photos 1 and 2). His Imperial Majesty was met at Parliament by UN Secretary-General Dag Hamarskjold (see photo 3).
Delegates elected Ato Abebe Retta of Ethiopia as chairman. Ato Abebe is seen with Executive Secretary Mekki Abbas, right, in photo 4. Third Vice Chairman Richelieu Morris confers with Sudanese Delegate Mamoun Beheiry in photo 5. One of the most colorful delegates was Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh, photo 6. Other pictures show delegations representing some of the African countries participating in the conference, including Guinea, newest member of the U.N.
The commission's permanent headquarters will be in Addis Ababa. Its objectives are to promote the orderly study and cooperation for economic growth and development -- a goal with which observer delegates, including the United States, offered to assist.
