# Pictorial Review, Volume II, Number 6: an Ethiopian student's visit to a US high school (Amharic-English poster distributed in Addis Ababa)

A bilingual Amharic-English picture-sheet on a 17-year-old Ethiopian delegate, Woizerit Bizuayehu Agonafir, who spent two weeks with a family in Malverne, New York, during a Herald Tribune-sponsored visit by students from 34 countries. Photographs show her with the host family's daughter, outside the house, in class, making papier mache masks and at a snack after school. The tell is plain-folks: ordinary American home and school life is shown through a visitor's eyes.

PICTORIAL REVIEW

Volume II Number 6

For the 13th consecutive year a leading New York City newspaper, The Herald Tribune, sponsored a three-month visit to the United States for high school students from 34 countries, including Ethiopia. The 18 girls and 16 boys, selected in nation-wide competitions under the auspices of the ministries of education in their own countries, arrived in the United States at the end of December 1958 and assembled at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. Transportation to the United States was supplied by Pan American Airways, Trans World Air Lines and Ethiopian Air Lines.
During their three months in America, students lived in the homes of different families in New York metropolitan area, and attended a high school in each community. At school the visitors participated in specially planned study units and took part in various social activities.
For the first time, Ethiopia's delegate was a girl, 17-year-old Woizerit Bizuayehu Agonafir of the Empress Menen school in Addis Ababa. During her stay in the United States, she spent two weeks as a guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Brombacker in Malverne, New York. She attended Malverne Senior High school with the Brombacker's daughter, Carol Ann, a fourth-year student. In these pictures are shown some of Woizerit Bizu's happy times in America.

Woizerit Bizu and Carol are shown in front of Malverne High school.
Outside the home where she lived for two weeks, Woizerit Bizu is shown with Carol and her mother.
In a creative arts class, Woizerit Bizu and Carol paint papier mache masks.
In a world history class, Woizerit Bizu discusses the progress Ethiopia has made in agriculture in the past 10 years.
Carol, Woizerit Bizu and her classmates enjoy a snack after school. Left to right: Carol, Woizerit Bizu, Mrs. Brombacker, Ejvind Bonderup, delegate from Denmark, and Ejvind's host, Arthur Mahoney.
