Une Femme Noire Accède à de Hautes Fonctions à New York

Mme Constance Baker Motley, nouvellement portée à la présidence de l'arrondissement municipal de Manhattan, à New York, est la première femme à occuper ce poste important. Mme Motley a de même été la première femme noire à être élue au Sénat de l'Etat de New York. Manhattan, qui est l'un des cinq arrondissements de la ville de New York, compte 1,7 millions d'habitants.

La Lauréate d'un Concours de Beauté Est Agréablement Surprise

Une jolie fille est photographiée au moment où elle est désignée comme lauréate d'un concours de beauté. C'est Ruth Weston (troisième à droite), choisie "Reine" de la Semaine de l'Histoire Nègre, programme qui se déroule à New York. Des visiteurs et des Américaines y ont pris part. Mrs. Motley was likewise the first black woman elected to the New York State Senate. Manhattan, one of the five boroughs of New York City, has 1.7 million inhabitants.

The Winner of a Beauty Contest Is Pleasantly Surprised

A pretty girl is photographed at the moment she is named winner of a beauty contest. She is Ruth Weston (third from right), chosen "Queen" of Negro History Week, a program held in New York. Visitors and Americans took part. Miss Weston will visit Africa next summer.

Robert F. Kennedy, member of the American Senate, and Mrs. Kennedy welcome Octavia John, a student from Sierra Leone. The meeting took place at a reception given in Washington, D.C., in honor of students enrolled in colleges and universities of the United States.

LEW ALCINDOR (center) is so tall he can easily reach the basketball hoop. Aged 17, he weighs 107 kg and is 2.16 m tall. A star of a secondary-school team, Alcindor has received many offers of scholarships from institutions interested in sports.

AN UNUSUAL OPERATION was performed when one of Mrs. Asabi Adedire's kidneys was grafted to her son Abraham to save his life. The mother and son, whom we see here reading the wishes of sympathetic Americans, travelled to the United States by plane for this operation.
