Upper Volta President Visits United States

President Maurice Yameogo of the Republic of Upper Volta is welcomed to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. He was invited to luncheon and a tour of the famed building by U Thant, U.N. Secretary-General. President Yameogo and his party applauded (above) when the Upper Volta Ambassador to the U.N. took his place in the General Assembly. In this picture are, left to right, Raphael Medah, Minister of Commerce, and Begnon Kone, President of the National Assembly, both of Upper Volta; President Yameogo; U Thant; Lompolo Kone, Minister of National Defense, and Denis Yameogo, Minister at Large and Special Presidential Adviser, all of Upper Volta.

PHOTO AT RIGHT - President Yameogo speaks at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California, where an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred upon him. During his ten-day tour of the United States the Upper Volta Chief of State held talks with President Johnson and other top government leaders.

STUDIES AIRPORT MANAGEMENT - Modern methods of controlling traffic at a busy airport are demonstrated to George Emmanuel Tubman (facing camera) of Liberia, who is attending a training school at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Mr. Tubman, shown observing a flight dispatcher in the control tower, expects to work at Roberts Field, Monrovia, upon his return to Liberia.

WOMEN LEADERS from 33 nations, representing the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association), were entertained at the White House in Washington, D.C., by Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson (above, center), wife of the President of the United States, and Mrs. Laurance Rockefeller (left), vice president, International YWCA. They are shown welcoming Mrs. Evelyn Cole of Sierra Leone. PHOTO BELOW - The ladies also visited U.S. Senator Margaret Chase Smith. African Rhythm Highlights Music Festival As Dancers And Drummers Do The "Batakoto"

PHOTO AT LEFT - Pounding drums and the movements of the "Batakoto," an African dance, featured an exciting performance at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The occasion was the three-day festival of non-western music held during International Week at the University. These musicians and dancers are American and African college students, trained by Babatunde Olatunji, a Nigerian performer living in the United States.
PHOTO AT RIGHT - Part of the audience is shown in Cramton Hall. The festival was held to demonstrate how the arts contribute to better understanding among people of all nations.
