# Pictures in the News poster, No. 3 (English, Beirut)

A fold-out photo sheet of six captioned news photographs: the Paul Taubman band's concert crowd in Leopoldville, Ethiopia's award to two Americans and an Eleanor Roosevelt stamp, African journalists at a Johnson campaign rally in Baltimore, a Liberian soccer coach at Beloit College, a U.S. relay team at the Tokyo Olympics, and Martin Luther King Jr. voting in Atlanta. The tell is card-stacking: the items are selected as goodwill, achievement and civic participation, and the Nobel and Olympic names transfer prestige to them.

TAUBMAN BRASS BAND CONCERTS ATTRACT CROWDS
American band leader Paul Taubman races across Baudouin Stadium in Leopoldville, amid a crowd of exuberant youngsters, part of the audience of 30,000 people who came to hear the band concert. Mr. Taubman's band is making a goodwill tour which includes a score of countries. The American musicians have on a number of occasions invited local musicians to join them in musical "jam sessions." Another feature which has proved popular is to ask people from the audience to step out and lead the band, as this young woman (photo at left) did in Leopoldville. The band's musical repertoire ranges from light classics, to marches to Dixieland jazz.

Among other awards was one for fine arts, given to Ethiopian artist Ato Afework Tekle. He designed the Eleanor Roosevelt commemorative stamp (shown below). Part of the proceeds from the sale of the stamps will go to support humanitarian projects with which Mrs. Roosevelt was closely indentified.

AFRICAN NEWSMEN SEE PRESIDENT JOHNSON WIN BY GREATEST PLURALITY IN HISTORY
Seventeen newsmen from 14 African nations visited the United States to see how the American people elect their President. The newsmen arrived at the peak of the campaign and attended one of President Johnson's political rallies (above) in Baltimore, Maryland. On election night the African journalists stationed themselves in five cities across the country to watch the returns on television and to visit local political headquarters. The 17 journalists saw President Johnson and his running mate, Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, win by the greatest plurality in history. Vice-President-Elect Humphrey, shown at right during a visit to child care center, played an important role in getting the 1964 Civil Rights Bill passed by the United States Congress. As they ended their tour of the United States the African newsmen said they now have a better understanding of the American electoral process and a high regard for American hospitality and racial progress.

Dr. King is 35, the youngest man to win the peace prize, and the second Negro American and the 14th United States citizen to be honored. Dr. King announced that the award, about $54,000, would be used to further the civil rights cause.
