# The political farce of 1876

Pro-Tilden broadside chart (copyright 1877, Joseph A. Stoll, Newark, N.J.) on the disputed result. Portraits of eight Republican officials and justices (Morton, Garfield, Hoar, Strong, Bradley, Miller, Edmunds, Frelinghuysen) around the four members of the Louisiana Returning Board, with four boxed quotations including one from U.S. Grant and one from Charles Francis Adams. Headline: 'The two negroes and ten whites who defeated the will of the American people, as expressed through the Ballot box, on the 7th day of November 1876.'
