# "The poor soldier & his ticket for soup" (Yankee Notions lithograph, 1852)

Winfield Scott, in a tattered uniform and leaning on a crutch, holds out his cap to Columbia at the door of the Capitol while Brother Jonathan says 'He's come for his Ticket for--Soup!!' and the White House in the background is relabelled 'SOUP HOUSE'. Tell for name-calling: the soup jibe and the relabelled White House stand in for any argument about Scott's record.

## Text on the object

Original (English) · read from the image, not independently checked

```
[Sign on building at left:]
WHITE HOUSE
SOUP HOUSE
[Speech box, Jonathan:]
He's come for his Ticket for--Soup!!
[Speech box, Columbia:]
Jonathan? what does that old fellow want.
[Sign over doorway:]
CAPITOL
[On the liberty cap:]
LIBERTY
[Names under the figures:]
Scott          Jonathan          Columbia
[Title:]
THE POOR SOLDIER & HIS TICKET FOR SOUP.
[Imprint:]
Pub. at the office of Yankee Notions 98 Nassau St. N.Y.
```

Read from a 640 px derivative. The small lithographer's credit at lower left ('Strong Lith.') and the printer's address at lower right (98 Nassau St. N.Y.) are tiny and only partly legible; they match the LOC notes. The 'WHITE HOUSE' line on the building is struck through or overprinted by the 'SOUP HOUSE' line below it and is hard to read.
