# Pour qui? Pour l'Angleterre! (German anti-British posters, France)

Three copies of one French-language poster pasted side by side on a wall in occupied France, each showing a helmet on a grave cross above the question 'Pour qui? pour l'Angleterre!'. The small print calls the Englishman the butcher found wherever there are wounds and tears: 'barbare, égoïste, cruel'. The poster ties the dead soldier to Britain alone and attaches three insults to one nation.

## Text on the object

Original (French) · read from the image, not independently checked

```
POUR QUI ?
pour
L'ANGLETERRE !
Le voyageur autour du monde, voyant des
traces sanglantes, n'a pas besoin de chercher
le boucher,
c'est toujours l'Anglais ! On le trouve
sûrement là où il y a des blessures et des
larmes: barbare, égoïste, cruel !
C'est l'Anglais !
[small printed credit line at the foot of each poster, illegible]
```

English translation (machine translation by Claude, not verified by a fluent reader)

```
FOR WHOM?
for
ENGLAND!
The traveller around the world, seeing
bloody traces, has no need to look for
the butcher,
it is always the Englishman! He is surely found
where there are wounds and
tears: barbaric, selfish, cruel!
It is the Englishman!
[small printed credit line at the foot of each poster, illegible]
```

Read from an upscaled crop of an 800 px print; the body text is slightly soft but legible. A signature beside the helmet and the credit line at the foot are unreadable. The three posters carry identical text.
