# Private Property: No Admittance to Philanthropists (Congo State), F. C. Gould

A bearded, pith-helmeted man in a heavy coat leans with folded arms and a cigar against a tall fence beside a gate lettered 'Private property, no admittance to philanthropists, Congo State', with a skull on a post above and a dark handprint at the foot of the gate. Name-calling tell: the sign turns Leopold II's own claim of ownership into the label, and the props (skull, handprint) supply the accusation without any figures.
