# The Appomattox of the Third Termers: Unconditional Surrender (Puck cover, 16 June 1880)

Colour lithograph by Joseph Keppler in Puck (16 June 1880, vol. 7, pp. 266-267, as recorded by LOC), issued after the Republican convention at Chicago. Ulysses S. Grant, in Civil War uniform, hands a sword labelled 'IIId term imperialism' to James A. Garfield, who holds a paper marked for nomination; the title borrows Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and the label 'imperialism' is attached to the third-term effort.
