# A Two-Edged Record (Puck centerfold, 13 June 1900)

Chromolithograph by Udo J. Keppler in Puck, 13 June 1900 (v. 47, no. 1214, centerfold). A figure labelled for the Republican Party hoists a banner reading 'For President Wm. McKinley / Free Cuba, Gold Standard, Expansion, Prosperity, 1900'. Puck, drawn as a child, holds up a list of 'Tariff favored trusts', 'Jingo canal bluff', 'Ship subsidy steal' and 'Portorican scandals', and the caption has Puck telling the party 'the voters are going to consider both sides'. The cartoon counters a platform banner with a rival list of negatives, and attaches loaded words to the administration's record.

```
PUCK
FOR PRESIDENT WM. McKINLEY
FREE CUBA - GOLD STANDARD - EXPANSION - PROSPERITY
1900
[sash, partly hidden:] ...ER PARTY ... JUNE 1900
TARIFF FAVORED TRUSTS
JINGO CANAL BLUFF
SHIP SUBSIDY STEAL
PORTORICAN SCANDALS
PUCK (to Republican Party). - That banner is all right, but here are some things you have done badly. Don't forget that the voters are going to consider both sides!
