# President Putin greets President Bashar al-Assad before national flags (Russia, 21 November 2017)

Two men in dark suits shake hands in a wood-panelled room; the man on the left, smiling, stands in front of a red, white and black flag with two green stars, and a white flag is partly visible behind the man on the right. A flower arrangement sits at the lower edge. The tell is the staged handshake between flags, which presents the Russian president as the Syrian president's recognised partner and so lends the visit the standing of the state.
