# Acting President Putin presents awards to federal troops, Gudermes, 1 January 2000

Vladimir Putin, in a plain dark winter jacket and turtleneck, shakes hands with an officer in camouflage and a fur cap while holding a small object in his other hand; soldiers and a man in a white turban and embroidered robe look on. The tells are the head of state placed among troops in the war zone and a clergyman in the frame, which pair the new acting president with the army and religious authority.
