# FBIS Daily Report: Radio Free Grenada bulletins on the expected invasion, including 'Jamaican Invasion Plans Diversion'

Page S 25 of the U.S. FBIS Daily Report (Latin America, 24 October 1983), carrying three bulletins from Radio Free Grenada, the state radio, broadcast on 23-24 October 1983, a day before the U.S.-led invasion. One calls on 'all peace-loving countries' to 'condemn this decision'. A second relays a condemnation from a Barbadian opposition movement, which describes the plan as 'U.S. imperialism in collusion with' regional forces. A third cites an unnamed Kingston 'source' to say Jamaica's participation is meant 'to divert the attention of the Jamaican people' from IMF failures.

[Text] Here is another special announcement: According to international law, no country or group of countries can (?keep) a decision to invade another sovereign and independent country. The Revolutionary Military Council [RMC] tonight called on all peace-loving countries throughout the world and all organizations throughout the region and the world to immediately and forcefully condemn this decision and to express full solidarity for the people and country of Grenada. That was another announcement coming out of the newsroom of Radio Free Grenada.

[Text] Barbados' Movement for National Liberation was (?angry) and condemned the planned invasion of Grenada by U.S. imperialism in collusion with the military forces of Barbados and Jamaica and the OECS [Organization of Eastern Caribbean States] states.
[Begin recording] The Political Bureau and Central Committee of the Movement for National Liberation of Barbados and the entire management of the movement condemns (?vehemently) the planned invasion of Grenada by U.S. imperialism in collusion with the military forces of Barbados, Jamaica and the OECS states, fraternizing forever with the Grenadian people and the Grenadian revolution. [end recording]
That was a statement (?from) the Liberation Movement of Barbados.
Jamaican Invasion Plans 'Diversion'
FL240350 St Georges Domestic Service in English 0301 GMT 24 Oct 83
[Text] Radio Free Grenada has learned that despite announcements by Jamaica's Prime Minister Edward Seaga to the contrary, Jamaica has failed all three of the critical IMF tasks. The International Monetary Fund has suspended its (?intended) fund loan agreement with Jamaica and as a result, the Seaga regime cannot draw down its regular quarterly sum.
This development has not been announced in Jamaica as yet and attempts are being made there to cover it up.
A source in Kingston told RFG News tonight: This failing of the IMF tasks by the Seaga regime would bring incalculable hardship on the Jamaican people. It would mean yet another devaluation of the Jamaican dollar, the closure of factories, further import restriction, and massive layoffs of workers.
Our source linked Jamaica's participation in the force being put together to invade Grenada with this further deterioration of the Jamaican economic situation. He said the Jamaican Government was anxious to divert the attention of the Jamaican people away from this (?dread) economic situation facing them as well as to curry favor with the United States.
He said the move was meant also to divert the attention of the Jamaican soldiers in particular, as they have been experiencing particularly difficult economic circumstances under the Seaga government.
That was a special news bulletin from the newsroom of Radio Free Grenada.
