# Rocky Mountain Club, Hoover Fund: Relief in Belgium, The World Is Not All Dark

A drawing of a miner swinging a pick in a shaft shows a vision of children above him in a beam of light, under a banner referring to Belgian children and South African miners. Red side panels say South African miners give ten per cent of their wages for Belgian relief and ask whether American miners will do one tenth as well. A boxed quotation from Herbert Hoover recounts the miners' gifts and the poster ends with a request for funds sent to a named treasurer. The tell of bandwagon is the comparison with a named group's giving, reinforced by a testimonial from the relief effort's chairman.

"In a moment of desperation I assessed the miners of Australia, where I had a connection for many years. I told them what they ought to give, and I received in two months $750,000 for Belgium from a country already combed to the bottom for relief and distress work. We appealed to the miners of Johannesburg, and the laborers in the mines gave ten per cent of their wages, and the owners duplicated the amount. I feel that in this stress the American miner might also give some help for the suffering children of Belgium, and it was with a feeling of peculiar satisfaction that the first gentleman who rang me up was a miner who said, 'My assessment is about $100,000.'" —HERBERT HOOVER, before the Rocky Mountain Club.
