# Sosialistijohdon pimitystyö (The obscurantism of the socialist leadership): anonymous anti-socialist broadsheet, 1918

An unsigned Finnish broadsheet with a bold title and dense text accusing the 'socialist leadership' of lying to workers, preaching class hatred, forcing men to arms, fraternising with Russian troops and starting a civil war while claiming to defend freedom. It calls armed opponents 'villain bands' (roistojoukot), their leaders a 'ringleader gang' (johtajakopla) and Russian soldiers 'ryssä' (a pejorative), and blames them for the workers' coming losses.

Aikana, jolloin maa nälänhädän partaalla, ulkonaisten vaarojen partaalla ja kiireellisten uudistusten puutteessa, nousee osa kansaa asevoimin vieraiden pistimien turvissa omaa kansaa vastaan.
Syyt monet, mutta yksi tärkeimpiä on se tunnoton, häikäilemätön kiihotustyö ja järjestelmällinen pimittäminen, valehteleminen, jota sosialistijohdon taholta on joukkoja vastaan harjoitettu.
Edellytykset tähän ovat ennenkaikkea kansan alhainen sivistystaso, joka tekee sille mahdottomaksi itse tarkoin punnita asioita, mutta ennenkaikkea monet epäkohdat yhteiskunnassa, jotka vähäosaiset omasta kokemuksestaan selvästi tuntevat ja antavat mainion todelta tuntuvan lähtöpohjan sille suuremmoiselle huiputukselle, jota työläisiä kohtaan on harjotettu.
Tältä pohjalta on ollut helppo lietsoa vihaa joukkoihin, sokaisevaa vihaa.

Näillä edellytyksillä on ollut sitten helppo syöttää mitä tahansa ja sitä on johdon taholta silmittömällä häikäilemättömyydellä käytetty. Puheet ja käytäntö ovat olleet mitä huikeimmassa ristiriidassa.
Puhutaan vapaudesta ja omissa joukoissa harjoitetaan niin kamalaa painostusta toisinajattelevia kohtaan, niiltä riistetään yksin toimeentulomahdollisuudetkin.
Kaunein sanoin uskotellaan vastustettavan asevelvollisuutta ja itse raahataan miehiä pistimien välissä sotaan omia kansalaisia vastaan.
Kiljutaan kuolemanrangaistuksen poistamisesta nähtävästi, jotta oma henki olisi vastedes turvassa ja omat asejoukot teurastavat ilman tutkintoa rauhallisia ihmisiä syyttä aiheetta.
Kehutaan puolustettavan Suomen itsenäisyyttä ja turvaudutaan itsekkäiden vallanhankkeiden tueksi vieraan vallan asevoimaan, hajoitetaan sen avulla kansaneduskunta, kotimainen hallitus ja annetaan sen sekaantua oman maan sisäisiin asioihin. Omat asejoukot veljeilevät ryssien kanssa, asuvat ryssien kasarmeissa, ampuvat omia kansalaisia ryssien kivääreillä ja äkseeraavat ryssän soltujen komennossa.
Kun omat asestetut roistojoukot tekevät kotirauhattomuutta ja aseryöstöjä, nimitetään niitä kotitarkastuksiksi ja takavarikoimisiksi, jos aseiden oikeat omistajat ottavat omansa takaisin, sanotaan heidän ryöstävän.
Ja kun tämä kaikki menee täydestä kuin väärä raha, ja johtajat tunnottomia, vallanhimoisia eikä maassa vahvaa järjestysvaltaa, eivät he ole malttaneet jättää sitä hyväkseenkäyttämättä.
Joukoille uskotellaan, että porvarit asestautuvat heitä vastaan. Se menee täydestä vaikkei sitä voi kukaan ajatteleva ihminen uskoa.
Uskotellaan elintarvekätköistä ärsyttääkseen joukkoja ja kun hallitus tahtoo panna yleisen tarkastuksen lopettaakseen kerta kaikkiaan huhut, estävät he tarkastuksen.
Kun elintarvepula uhkaa, uskotellaan, että porvarit tahtovat tappaa työläiset nälkään. Valhe joka räikeydessä hakee turhaan vertaistaan. Tämän varjolla yllytetään joukkoja aseisiin ikäänkuin kiväärit lisäisivät leipää.
Eduskunnassa tehdään mielettömiä vaatimuksia ja kenkkuillaan kunnallisia uudistuksia käsiteltäessä ja joukoille uskotellaan, että porvarit vastustavat työläisten parasta tarkottavia uudistuksia.

The obscurantism of the socialist leadership.

At a time when the country is on the brink of famine, on the brink of external dangers and in lack of urgent reforms, a part of the people rises up in arms, under the protection of foreign bayonets, against its own people.
The causes are many, but one of the chief ones is the unscrupulous, ruthless agitation and systematic concealment and lying that has been practised against the masses from the side of the socialist leadership.
The preconditions for this are above all the people's low level of education, which makes it impossible for them to weigh matters carefully themselves, but above all the many grievances in society that the poor clearly know from their own experience and that give an excellent, true-seeming starting point for the great swindle that has been practised against the workers.
On this basis it has been easy to stir up hatred in the masses, blinding hatred.
They have been made to believe that the interests of the bourgeois and the workers are in irreconcilable conflict, and class barriers have been preached.
Certain doctrines to be believed blindly have been hammered into the heads of the masses.
A narrow worldview and intolerance of the zealots has been implanted in the masses.
With these preconditions it has then been easy to feed them anything, and the leadership has used it with blind unscrupulousness. Speeches and practice have been in the most extreme contradiction.
They talk of freedom and in their own ranks practise such dreadful pressure on dissenters that even their means of livelihood are taken from them.
With fine words they pretend to oppose conscription and themselves drag men between bayonets to war against their own citizens.
They scream for the abolition of the death penalty apparently so that their own lives would be safe in future, and their own armed forces slaughter peaceful people without trial for no reason.
They boast of defending Finland's independence and rely, in support of selfish power-grabs, on the armed forces of a foreign power, dissolve with its help the people's parliament and the domestic government, and let it interfere in the internal affairs of their own country. Their own armed forces fraternise with the 'ryssä' (pejorative for Russians), live in the barracks of the 'ryssä', shoot their own citizens with the rifles of the 'ryssä' and drill under the command of the 'ryssä' soldiers.
When their own armed villain bands commit breaches of domestic peace and weapons robberies, these are called house searches and requisitions; if the rightful owners of the weapons take their own back, it is said they are robbing.
And when all this goes down like false money, and the leaders are unscrupulous, power-hungry, and there is no strong order-keeping power in the country, they have not been able to refrain from exploiting it.
The masses are made to believe that the bourgeois are arming against them. That goes down, though no thinking person can believe it.
They are made to believe in food hoards in order to irritate the masses, and when the government wants to institute a general inspection to put an end to the rumours once and for all, they prevent the inspection.
When a food shortage threatens, they are made to believe that the bourgeois want to starve the workers to death. A lie whose flagrancy vainly seeks its equal. Under this pretext the masses are incited to arms, as if rifles would add bread.
In the Diet senseless demands are made and obstruction is practised when municipal reforms are handled, and the masses are made to believe that the bourgeois oppose reforms aimed at the workers' good.
