# Soldat roman! (leaflet to Romanian troops in the Crimea, 1944)

A small Romanian-language slip headed 'Romanian soldier!' that tells the reader to count how many friends have died in his platoon, says the same fate awaits him unless he surrenders to the Red Army, and gives a password to cross over ('Farewell Crimea, down with Hitler and Antonescu'). The tell is the casualty count turned into a personal forecast with one prescribed remedy, surrender.

## Text on the object

Original (Romanian) · read from the image, not independently checked

```
Soldat roman!
Fă socoteală, câți prieteni au pierit în plutonul tău.
Aceiași soartă te așteaptă și pe tine, dacă nu te predai prizonier Armatei Roșii.
Treci la noi cu parola: „Adio Crimeia, jos cu Hitler și Antonescu”
```

English translation (machine translation by Claude, not verified by a fluent reader)

```
Romanian soldier!
Do the sums: how many friends have perished in your platoon.
The same fate awaits you too, if you do not surrender as a prisoner to the Red Army.
Cross over to us with the password: 'Farewell Crimea, down with Hitler and Antonescu'
```

Printed text only; the museum's stamps and handwritten numbers are omitted. The heading's final letter is printed 'roman' as in the source, without the circumflex of modern spelling 'român'. Machine translation by Claude, not checked by a fluent reader of Romanian.
