# Stalinskoe znamya, daily edition, front page (Ryazan, June 23, 1941)

Front page of a Ryazan Party-and-Soviet daily, Monday 23 June 1941, the day after the German attack. The whole upper half is the full text of Molotov's radio address of 22 June 1941, with his portrait, a slogan strapline quoting it ('The whole of our people must now be united and as one as never before'), and two decrees of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (martial law; mobilisation). The address is the Soviet government's first public statement of the invasion; the page carries no other news.

Our whole people must now be united and as one as never before. Each of us must demand of himself and of others discipline, organisation and self-sacrifice worthy of a true Soviet patriot, to provide for all the needs of the Red Army, navy and air force, to provide victory over the enemy.

Radio address of the Deputy Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR and People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs, Comrade V. M. MOLOTOV
22 June 1941

Citizens, men and women of the Soviet Union!
The Soviet government and its head, Comrade Stalin, have instructed me to make the following statement:
Today at 4 o'clock in the morning, without any claims presented to the Soviet Union, without a declaration of war, German troops attacked our country, attacked our borders in many places and bombed from their aircraft our cities — Zhitomir, Kiev, Sevastopol, Kaunas and some others, with more than two hundred killed and wounded.
[...]
Now that the attack on the Soviet Union has already taken place, the Soviet government has given our troops the order to repel the bandit attack and drive the German troops from the territory of our homeland.
[...]
Our cause is just. The enemy will be defeated. Victory will be ours.
