# Te Haeata (Auckland), 'Te Runanga Maori ki Kohimarama', 1 September 1860

Front page of a Maori-language Wesleyan newspaper headed 'Te Runanga Maori ki Kohimarama', reporting the Governor's conference of chiefs during the Taranaki war. Tell: the report calls every speech good and rests on 'aroha' (goodwill) and 'one law for Maori and Pakeha', abstract virtue words, with no speaker or vote counted.

To nga Pakeha tenei e hiahia nei. Engari tenei, mahia tenei wahi.

TE HAEATA.

THE MAORI CONFERENCE AT KOHIMARAMA.

The Conference of the Maori chiefs summoned by the Governor has ended. The people are going back, each to his home. This Conference has ended well. All the speeches were good: although some words were laid against the Government, that is well, they were spoken in the open. That is what the Governor asked, that the people should bring out their grievances, and the chiefs did not hide their thoughts; their griefs and their understandings were discussed at length. Their statements were answered by Mr McLean, the head of that Conference,—he explained the matters they were troubled about, and so they were enlightened. Two great resolutions were agreed to by that Conference: [illegible], and adhering to the Pakeha.

[...]

[...] let there be one law for this island, one for the Maori and the Pakeha, let them be equal. This is what the Pakeha wish. But as for this, do this work.
