# The Way Back

A photo-story sheet headed 'Đường về' (The Way Back) tells how a 22-year-old woman, Nguyen Thi Mai, left a Viet Cong unit and reached the Ninh Thuan Chieu Hoi centre. Four photographs show her smiling beside a Chieu Hoi poster, with former comrades, and shopping in a Phan Rang market. The single named returnee speaking for the programme is a testimonial.

THE WAY BACK

Miss Nguyen-Thi-Mai, 22 years old, was born in Phuong-Cuu, Thanh-Hai district, Ninh-Thuan province. Three years ago she was lured by the propaganda of the organisation falsely calling itself the "National Liberation Front of South Vietnam" and followed a Viet Cong unit from Base 7 in Ninh-Thuan. But afterwards she discovered the truth about the "Front". She saw betrayal with her own eyes and heard lies with her own ears. She began to think of ways to leave the Viet Cong ranks and return to the Just Cause, but she was always watched too closely and had no chance to carry out her intention.
In the end, one day she got her wish thanks to a good opportunity brought by a clearing operation of the R.V.N. army. She escaped the VC and made contact with the Ninh-Thuan Chieu Hoi Center.
Now she lives in peace and happiness and can begin a new life under the protection of the R.V.N. Government.

[on the poster held in the photograph:] RETURN TO THE LIGHT OF FREEDOM

This picture of Miss Mai was taken shortly after she escaped the VC's control, in August 1966. Like thousands of other ralliers, only then did she learn the true meaning of Freedom.

Picture of Miss Mai talking with members of a Revolutionary Development (Building a New Life) team. She recounts all the trials she went through so that they understand better and can explain clearly to the people the VC's scheming methods.

Sometimes, at leisure, Miss Mai strolls the streets of the provincial town of Phan-Rang. For the first time in three years, Miss Mai can buy the things she needs and likes.
